Geocities is Closing – Are You Seriously Going to Pay Yahoo in Return?

Since 1995, Geocities has been offering free web hosting space to anyone who could upload a web page and a flashing animated gif. As of October 26^th, Yahoo will discontinue the service and leave all of its users without a web site.

And what if you have a web site at Geocities? You’d better move fast!

Yahoo’s Options

Yahoo’s solution is to move your Geocities site to their paid hosting platform. The ad on the Geocities page touts Yahoo Web Hosting for just $4.95 per month for the first 12 months and then $9.95 a month thereafter.

Searching through the features Yahoo offers and reviews of their service, is sounds like an acceptable deal. However, jumping from “free” to $9.95 a month is pretty steep.

No Thanks Yahoo Web Hosting

While keeping everything with Yahoo seems like the easiest solution, the whole thing would leave a bad taste in my mouth. I would be hard pressed to give them any of my money after they pulled the plug on my site.

What about another free web hosting service?

They do exist, and some have popped up just to try and lure Geocities refugees, but as this situation clearly illustrates, you get what you pay for with “free” web hosting. How much faith would you put into a no-name company to help you out long-term if a company like Yahoo won’t do it?

The Smart Alternative

If you are serious about your Geocities data and are ready to graduate to a real web site, then you need to get some inexpensive quality hosting and start over with WordPress.
